How Clean Is Your Colon?

How clean is your colon?  This is not a typical question for someone to ask, but we're friends, right?  And friends want the best for each other.  I want you to be in tip top shape while we go on our journey to living healthy and wealthy.  And it's time we clear the air about the things we're putting in our bodies that could potentially impede our progress.

Let's start by becoming familiar of what our colon is and what it does.

The colon is about six feet long and is the part of the body's digestive system that moves waste material from the small intestine to the rectum. The small intestine sucks all the nutrients out of what you eat and then passes on the leftover waste to the large intestine, the first part of which is the colon

As the colon transports the waste material toward the rectum, it absorbs water from the waste. It may also absorb harmful materials. The longer it takes for waste to pass through the colon, the greater the chance of absorbing such materials.

For the most part, you can tell how long waste sits in your colon by how often you poop. In general, the more you poop, the faster your colon is "processing" material.

Your colon handles massive amounts of toxic waste every day. If that’s allowed to sit in your body for too long, it can be continually reabsorbed into your bloodstream, leading to a whole host of long-term health problems. Experts recommend regular colon cleansing to help keep your body healthy and functioning, but the colon cleanse that works like a charm for one person might just end up causing cramping and bloating in another.

With that being said, when was the last time you had a total-system detox?  Never had one?  Well now is the time for you to clean your pipe - unclog your drain and give the tidy bowl man something to "do."

I was shocked to learn that most people only "poop" once or twice a week!  That's unbelievable for me because I am one of the most "regular" people you'll ever meet.  I go at least 2 to 3 times a day.  Relatively speaking, you should "go" after every meal.  Which means at least 3 times a day.  Not 3 times a week or a month and God forbid a year!
Here is a word of advice when it comes to cleansing. NATURAL IS ALWAYS THE BEST WAY TO GO. Try to stay away from those so-called quick fixes like colonic and water detox therapies or the ones where prescription drugs are involved. They might get your the results you want immediately, but you run the serious risk of complications that can sometimes be deadly. I don't want to scare anyone or make any claims that would lead you to think I am diagnosing, treating or curing any situation as a medical expert. But what I know is this - all of our ailments can be cured naturally, without drugs. It's biblical. If you don't believe me, read the book of Genesis.

Aside from cleansing, a tune-up in your diet is in order.  I won't go into too many details today, I'll save that for another blog - maybe tomorrow.  But what I will tell you is that you should be drinking  half your weight in water or at least 80 to 100 ounces of H2O everyday.  And you need to get plenty of fruits, vegetables and fiber-rich foods in your diet.  Just those simple changes will help clear the runway for toxins to leave your body.

My last recommendation for keeping your colon as clean as you can is to do a detox 4 times a year.  A good way to remember when it's time for your system tune-up is to do it at the start of every season - winter, spring, summer fall.  If you stick to that time frame, that means every 90 days you are giving your body the attention it needs for peak performance.  Just like you change the oil in your car -- you should schedule seasonal maintenance for your body.  Not only will you feel like a new person, you'll look like one too.  You might even begin to have fewer recurring illnesses like colds and allergies.  And for those of us always fighting the battle of the bugle, you'll like what you start seeing on the scale too.

Get Into the Groove

Hello healthy and wealthy friends.  Your guide to claiming your health and wealth is back!

I must say, Madonna's performance at this year's Super Bowl inspired me to "get into the groove" and get back on this blog.  Afterall, I owe it to myself and to you.  The self-made "Material Girl" has not lost a step during her career that has spanned nearly 30 years.  She takes breaks, but never loses sight of her goals.  I made a promise to navigate this journey with you, despite twists and turns along the way.  And after nearly a four month hiatus, I am ready to tackle issues again.

While I never lost a passion for this blog, I did let life get in the way.  Thank you to everyone who has emailed and asked me what's going on and where are the entries.  Your concern and inspiration are what kept the fire burning for me.  Now, let's continue to get healthy and wealthy TOGETHER!!

Today's entry will be short and sweet.  I have just a few words of advice to get us back on track.

For starters, GET INTO THE GROOVE!  I know you remember the Madonna song "Into the Groove" from 1985.  And if you don't, then Google it!  There is nothing really special about the lyrics, but it is one of my favorite Madonna tunes.  It's fun, upbeat and it keeps me groovin' when I hear it.  And that's just the way life should be.  NO MATTER WHAT!

You have control over finding your groove.  Always keep a beat moving in your head and your heart that you can dance to.  Others around you should want to get in on the beat.  The beginning of  "Into The Groove" says "And you can dance, For inspiration."  Well, if that's what it takes to keep you in tune and in step with your dreams, then DANCE, DANCE, DANCE.  Because you are an inspiration - and don't you forget it.  Not to get too lyrical, but it means the world when someone says "You Are The Wind Beneath My Wings."  Embrace it.  Live up to it.  People are counting on you.  And it doesn't matter how great or small the circumstance may be.  You have the power to overcome everything that comes your way.

This is the attitude we must maintain as we pursue our journey to claim our health and our wealth.

As a young lady at a local currency exchange said to me today, I need to read your blog because I need help to be healthy - so I can one day be wealthy.  And if she's reading this (and she promised me she would), I want to tell you that you are already on the road to living healthy and wealthy.  You have acknowleged your desire to live a better life.  Now it's time to get the proper tools in your box so you can go to work.  I'm here for you!!

Thanks again everyone.  Let's get this healthy and wealthy train moving and grooving!!

Nutrional Supplements: Friend or Foe? What exactly do you need?

Being a vegetarian, I'm always being bombarded with unsolicited advice from people about what I need to do to make sure I'm getting proper nutrition - since "there is no way you're getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need without eating meat."  Most of the time, I respectfully say, thank you for your advice.  Other times, I wind up getting into a long-winded debate and I have to wear my nutrition specialist certificate on my forehead.  That's not to say I think I know everything, but I do know a little about a lot of stuff.  And supplements is one of those topics I am passionate about.

I felt compelled to share some of my thoughts with you today after several people this week mentioned how many/how much supplements they are using.  It shocked me to hear how much stuff people are taking daily - and they don't have a clue about what they need or why they're taking it.

First and foremost, I believe we need to define the word supplement.  My friends at Webster's says a supplement is "something that completes or enhances something else when added to it."  A few synonyms for the word are : noun. addition - addendum - appendix - appendage - complement
verb. complement - complete - eke out - add - replenish

Now that we understand what a supplement is, I have to make an obvious statement. A supplement is just that - a supplement. Meaning, it should not be your sole source for anything. When deciding to add supplements to your diet, you should examine what you are already getting from food sources and what you are doing to deplete your levels. This is the best starting point before you run out and clear the shelves at your local health food store. My philosopy is the closer your diet is to that of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, the healthier it is for us. Hence, the reason I became a vegetarian more than six years ago.

All of today's diseases are a direct result of our diet.  High blood pressure, cardivascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, asthma, allergies, obesity and so on and so on, are triggered by what we put in our mouths.  Don't believe the hype about it being hereditary.  A large percentage of our ancestors did not die as a result of the disease I mentioned.  So how does it start you ask?  It starts with learned behavior.  If your parents ate/lived life a certain way, chances are you will too.  That's the closest heriditary link to diseases there is.

Here is some helpful information I found while researching this topic:

1.)Watch Your Sugar Intake (or Glycemic Load) Simply put, eat less sugary stuff as this gives you a fast high burst of energy and an equally fast low, which in turn gives you the desire for more sugar to increase your energy level and the vicious cycle repeats itself. The excess energy that your body doesn't use is converted into fat. Brown sugar, white sugar or honey - they all have the same effect. This is an exception to the general rule that the brown alternative is best. Sugar is sugar no matter the colour. When it comes to dietary supplementation, sugar is the killer even more so than fat.

2.)Watch your Fat Intake (or Fatty Acid Composition)Don't cut out fat altogether because that is what your brain functions on. But we need to eat monounsaturatedand Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This should be eaten in a ratio of two Omega 6 fat molecules to every one Omega 3 molecule. The best source of Omega 3 is of course fish. But if you are not a fish fan then an Omega 3 dietary supplement is a good alternative.

3.)Watch your Protein Intake (or Macronutrient Composition) Protein is an appetite suppressant and a natural fat burner and can therfore promote weight loss.It helps you feel fuller and burns more calories thus increasing your metabolismrate. The best sources of protein are fish, chicken, turkey, grass fed beef and eggs. Try and avoid fatty meats if possible like lamb and pork. You can eat them once in a while but make sure you cut off all the excess fat. You can also supplement your protein intakewith dietary helps like protein bars and powders. Be careful with these though.

4.)Watch Your Fruit and Vegetable Intake(or Micronutrient Density)At least one third of our calories should come from fruit and vegetables. The
fiberfrom them will help us feel full and satisfied without gaining weightIdeally we should eat them in this order: raw fresh vegetables, steamed vegetables then fruit. We should be cautious about the amount and types of fruits we eat because of the high sugar content of some fruits. Fruit juice should be low on your agenda because of the difficulty in quantifying the number of fruits that go into it. Supplementing your diet with vitamin and mineral tablets can add to your daily dietary supplement requirements.

6.)Watch Your Salt Intake (or Sodium Potassium-Ratio)Rule of thumb is don't add salt to your food. If you must make it the low sodium variety or better still be adventourous and rather add spices to flavour your cooking. You will then reduce your risk of developing hypertension, stroke, kidney stones etc. Eat fresh foods instead of packaged or processed ones especially fruits and vegetables. This will increase your potassium level. The ideal sodium to potassium ratio is less than 1 - and this electrolyte balance is critical for normal cell function.

7.)Watch Your Fiber Intake
Ideally we need about 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. It promotes the slow emptying of the stomach and reduces your appetite thus the total number of calories you consume will reduce. You can then avoid disorders connected to low dietary fiber like constipation, and hernia. The best source of fiber of course are fruits and vegetables. There are some good nutritional supplements fiber around as well.

8.)Watch Your Water IntakeIt is absolutely essential that you drink sufficient liquid. Water of course is the best form of liquid as it doesn't come with additional calories. It's no good drinking loads of water in one go to make up your quota. That doesn't work. You need a regular intake spread throughout the day. Experts differ on the quantity you should drink but between 4 and 8 eight ounce glasses a day depending on your weight. Tea and coffee don't count towards your water intake because the caffeine in both cause your kidney to excrete more water than they contain. In other words you pee alot. Green tea however can be a great energy booster and studies show that it can stimulate your metabolism to burn more calories so it is an ideal dietary supplement.

I always tell people, it's great to get advice and information from others, but do your own research.  You can't live life to the fullest just by going on what others have to say.  Knowledge is power.  Arm yourself with it.  It's a vital key to ensure you are living healthy and wealthy.

Sticktoitiveness: Learned or Innate?

The first time I heard someone say the word STICKTOITIVENESS, I thought they had just made it up.  And maybe they did.  But now, it has a permanent place in Webster's dictionary.  So, I guess I'll never underestimate the power of social influence on structured education.  Nevertheless, this word always intrigued me.  No matter how many times I heard this awkward word, it made me giggle.  And now, ten years since first hearing it, I believe I actually understand what sticktoitiveness actually means - and know it is not learned.  You're definitely born with it.  Sometimes you just need the right circumstance to bring it out of you.   This funny word now makes me smile.  Why?  Because it describes me to a "T."  And I'm sure, it describes many of you who are always on the path of living healthy and wealthy.

People with Sticktoitiveness are unflappable.  They rise to the occasion with confidence, in spite of obstacles or missteps along the way.  Much like myself, my buddies with sticktoitiveness gain strength from adversity.  While at times, it may look live we're just treading water, deep down inside, we are learning the errors of our ways and devising a plan to overcome our situation.

This is a characteristic that cannot be taught.  Either you have it or you don't.  Bascially, I'm telling you this:  If you are a person who gives up, doesn't take chances, let's someone talk you out of your dreams or has a habit of starting something and never finishing it -- you probably don't have sticktoitiveness.

If you want to be successful and anything - NEVER GIVE UP!!  Always press forward with a positive outlook in all areas of your life.  The road will get rough, but you are strong enough and tough enough to make it through.  How will you ever know if you'll ever attain the goals you have inside if you don't take a chance, step out on faith and tell yourself there is no such thing as a failure - as long as you try.

Stick to it!  You'll be living healthy and wealthy in no time at all!

Every day is a day of thanksgiving

A very important key to living healthy and wealthy is to be thankful and grateful to see another day.  Do you know how blessed you are to experience the breath of life?  Did you wake up this morning with a roof over your head?  In a nice, comfy bed?  Were you able to get up without assistance from anyone or anything?  You had running water?  Something to eat?  Money in your pocket?  Money in the bank?  A negative balance?  (A positive is on the way) Clothes?  Most importantly, you had your faculities and your health (no matter what state - you can always get better).

To me, these things we take for granted each day is our true source of wealth.  We didn't earn the right to life - but have it.  We don't deserve the grace and favor that is bestowed upon us 24-7, but you know what -- God loves us so much, he wants us to have a life abundant of the best of the best - and to live extraordinary - beyond any man's measure.  So be thankful my friends.  Today is an awesome day.  And guess what?  Your best days are still ahead of you.  Tell someone you love them.  Be nice and treat everyone justly.  Remember, we aren't always living up to God's highest expectations, but he forgives us and continues to bless of all of the time.

Keep walking by faith.  It's the only way to ensure we live healthy and wealthy for an eternity.

Business or Hobby?

It's been a while since we've last chatted. I must say I've missed you. There has not been a day that has gone by and I haven't said - "Man, I need to get back to my blog spot!" Well, today is the day - and the time could not have come sooner. Besides missing our chats - I really needed to get something off my chest.  I keep running into the same issue while attempting to complete transactions with other entrepreneurs. I am finding out that most people are running their businesses like a hobby, instead of a actual business!  ANNOYING!

Here is a question for those of you running your own business.  Are you actively working your business  -whether it's home-based or brick-and-motar, at least seven to ten hours a week?  That amounts to about an hour to an hour-and-a-half daily.  If you can't answer yes - or if you are a customer and you can't reach a business because there's never anyone around to assist you - THEN YOU / OR THAT BUSINESS IS NOT IN BUSINESS!!  It's as simple at that!

No one should have to hire bounty hunter or put out an A.P.B to find you.  Unless your name is "Waldo" or "Carmen San Diego" (two popular PBS kids shows)  Catch my drift?

THE FORTUNE IS IN THE FOLLOW-UP!!!

This leads me to the other issue that irks me with most businesses.  It's the lack of customer service. I'm just going to cut to the chase. Respect people and their time, respect their requests, respect their complaints - even if they are as wrong as wearing two left shoes. Unfortunately, we have to grin and bear it. Be a person of your word. If you tell someone you're going to do something -- be like the folks at Nike - and just do it! Reward your customers for referrals.  Show them you appreciate them bringing business to your doorstep.  Word of mouth advertising is priceless.   Don't act like they didn't send you some business.   How dare you cash-in and not share the fruits of their labor? They did most of the work -- they got the customer to your doorstep. And  last but not least, for goodness sake - BE ON TIME!  I know things happen - but every time you set an appointment with someone, don't blow it off and be an hour late! Even if it's 5 minutes. Let your customer know it is an honor to serve them -- not the other way around.  You know the old saying...

TIME IS MONEY!!

But what you don't know is what's on your customer's calendar.  Trust me, if you keep disrespecting their time - they will find someone who doesn't.  And try to be accommodating.  I'm not saying bending over backwards all of the time.  But don't try to persuade someone to do what you want them to just to benefit you.  It's not about you.  That script gets old real fast.  And if you're like me, the 3 strike rule applies.  I'm not saying I will never do business with that person again, but I will give them something to think about during my hiatus from their services.

These are just a few broad strokes for those of us in customer-service fields.  I don't care what your product or service is - if you have to deal with people in any form or fashion - try raising the bar and set the standard for the two issues raised here - and it's off to the races for the health and wealth of your business.  Just another key to add to your ring of success.
